I m not sure that you are right as I work in the field of disabilities, and many of them struggle hard to accomplish many things that we take for granted. There are also cases of where they are well aware of their shortcomings and get depressed just like you or I would, however there are some that have very little awareness, but without that awareness they also lose choice in a lot of instances due to the fact that they cannot make choices even about the most mundane of things in their life. The one thing that is common with an intellectual disability is a duel diagnosis, with many complex issues, such as they may also suffer from heart defects, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy and many other physical disabilities on top of the intellectual one, and therefore in a lot of ways they are much more burdened than we are, as they are coping with life threatening conditions, where as we are just coping with everyday things such as mortgage, raising children etc.....but we also have the benefit of something positive at the end of our struggle....such as a mortgage free home, fully raised and grown up children etc....I m not so sure that they are the lucky ones, because to me I sometimes see very heavy burdens and yet sometimes they accomplish much in spite of their disability

I think you're screwed.

Don't worry about sounding horrible.

Imagine responsibilities that you are obligated to accomplish in a world where your accomplishments and obligations don't matter.

Imagine living in a world where all of the people around you can't find you because they think you are lost when you are right there in front of them.

Life is not easier if you are mentally challenged. Life only becomes more of a challenge

i think that life is what you make of it..there are way too many people who are not mentally challenged that see no reason to accomplish anything, society generally labels them too.. "BUMS"..but not knowing what really goes on inside a mentally challenged mind I have no way of knowing if there life is simpler or not...i suspect not though..

In some ways you are right, but think about this:

The mentally challenged are more vulnerable to physical and sexual assault.

Their dependence on caregivers also make them more vulnerable to physical abuse and neglect.

When they are among the, for lack of a better word "normal" public, they are often targeted by bullies.

If they are fortunate enough to have parents financially able to set up a trust fund for them, they are easy targets for embezzelers and con artists.

If they are aware of the fact that they are "different" or not "normal" then they have to deal with that every day (and so do a lot of other people--morbidly obese, physically handicapped, diabetic, geeky, just plain ugly, geniuses, etc., but for people of average and above average intelligence, it is easier to look at one's self objectively and see one's good qualities that balance the bad.)

Depending on the degree of disability, they may never know the sense of accomplishment that comes from living successfully on their own. Of course, they may be handicapped enough to not realize that that is a goal for most people and something they are missing out on.

Again, depending on the degree of disability, they may not always have the ability to take proper care of their own health, dressing warmly in cold weather, eating a balanced diet, bathing, washing hands, simple grooming and sanitation may be beyond them.

Again, depending on the degree of disability, when they are sick or injured, they may not have the vocabulary to accurately describe their symptoms and therefore may get inadequate medical treatment further endangering their lives or health. I know a mentally handicapped young woman who nearly lost a toe this way. Her mother let her do as much as she could for herself. She could get her socks on but not her shoes, and when her mother put her shoes on, she would only say "OW!" Her mom just thought they were tight or had a sharp edge that was bothering her, so she kept checking the shoes instead of the girl's feet. After a week, she took the girls socks off and she had a badly infected in-grown toenail. It took surgery and antibiotics to clean up the infection.

But it would sound that it would be better if you're not born, right? Each one of us has a purpose in life, and our mission is to fulfill it. And if you're mentally challenged, you don't really know where you're going in your life - making you feel worthless would be your path.

In fact, it'll make your life HARDER. Think about it.

If its a simple life you want, then you don't need to be mentally challenged to have that life. Just ignore the distractions and make your choice.

If you can.

Well, yeah thats reasonable.
But your general life experience would be so different. But I guess you wouldn't miss anything seeing as you cant remember it being different or anything. Thats a really good question but it depends alot on your situation and how you feel about life.

Well, since most of the people on Yahoo answers seem to be that way, I can't really say, but they should feel right at home. However, I don't think it's the ideal way to be, no.

dude, you are screwed. are you aware that mentally challenged people only have a disabled body? do you know that the soul in that abnormal body is still just as fully aware as the one in a normal body.
i.e. a perfectly normal person trapped in a body they cant control or understand. how would you feel?

Sounds much the same as having rich parents. I think I would rather be rich than disabled.
