i dont think so. this is your mom's job, to help you, to influence, to guide you. she shouldn't be so embarassed to talk about things like that. if you really cannot get her to listen to you, try asking an older sister (i know its hard) "can you explain to me how to use these?" or even another female relative. im sorry, but i think this is totally your moms job, and i think shes the one being rude.

No, it's not rude to ask that.

Tampons are a bit tricky, and some mothers aren't too fond of when that subject is brought up by their daughters because of the fact that they are inserted into the vagina and not just resting on the inside of a pair of panties.

Some mothers (and fathers) even believe that using a tampon will cause your hymen to break making you a non-virgin. It happens, but it's rare and uncommon - if it does, you're still a virgin until the day you have sexual intercourse. Just to clarify.

Your mother shouldn't shy away from the issue because she had to deal with it when she was just a girl, so she should help you during your first few years of having a period, since it's so new to you and to your body....reguardless of the fact that you're using sanitary pads, or tampons.

** and having your "tubes tied" doesn't prevent you from having your period: all a tubal ligation does is prevent sperm from getting into the fallopian tubes to the egg, and it prevents pregnancy. you will still have a menstrual cycle - getting a hysterectomy (entire removal of the uterus and cervix, sometimes even the ovaries and fallopian tubes), however, does prevent you from having a period because then you are complete sterile **

Say "Mom I need to get some girly stuff (feminine products, however you want to call it, but don't say pads!)".

Put tampons in cart, READ PAMPHLET thoroughly.

Its obvious your mom does not want to talk about it, so much so that she totally avoids the discussion.

Time to talk to an aunt, or another adult female that you know. Just explain to them that your mom refuses to talk to you about it.

That's not a bad solution, actually. (A little bit rude but it does seem she needs to be reached).
You could also pick a moment and ask her *why* she doesn't like the idea of you using tampons.. she might have to question herself. Have your arguments ready of why you want to use them.
