I live in buffalo NY and when I leave Town I set my T-stat at 58 degrees. But when you leave make sure you shut your water off at the meter (there will be a shut off just after it) and then open a faucet and make sure it drains and shuts off. Because no matter what you set your heat at, if you have a power failure it won't matter. The temp will go to whatever it is outside. Then if it comes back on a few days later your house will warm up and if you have a pipe that has burst water will be every where. (and still running) the only thing worst than water damage is fire.

In addition to what Jon F said - which were very good points (& I know because I dealt with burst copper pipes - NOT fun) I usually set all my stats to 55deg. Are you only going away overnight or are you going to be gone for a few days? If for some reason you don't have to shut the domestic supply off & drain the domestic water (sink, etc), 55 is OK.Ambient earth temp is usually between 52-55 deg so anything in a basement that's underground probably won't be exposed to temps lower than that. Once there are water lines etc exposed to external walls that block the outside elements (upstairs sink for example), then it's possible they could be affected by colder temps, so 55 on the stat is a good spot. It's really a handy feature to have stats which are programmable with features like 'Hold' for when you leave for a couple days. I have Lux stats in my house which are very easy to use along with having this feature.

You don't mention where you live - warm or cold climate so I'm going with cold climate.
Set temp. at about 52-55 degrees. If ouside temps have gone down, down, down, 0 or below, be safe and set at 55 degrees. If kitchen and/or bathroom sink is on outside wall, keep bottom cabinet doors open. Better safe than sorry.
You shouldn't have any problems.
Have a great holiday

As long as you don't turn off the heat completely if your in a cold climate you'll be fine with the lowest setting. You just don't want pipes in the house to freeze is all that your concerned with at this point. Also have a friend or neighbor look in on your place from time to time to be sure that nothing is freezing.

The minimum is 55 degrees to keep your pipes from freezing.
