It takes almost 60 seconds to go from one e-mail to the next or even to delete one. I just defragmented my computer and it has 73% free space. This slowness has just recently happened, so I don't know if I accidently did something to make this happen. I have no clue as to what my next step might be to try. As you can see I'm not very computer literate. I would appreciate any detailed step by step answers. Thanks.

re installing windows would clear junk
buy a faster harddrive if your willing to spend money on your computer your current hard drive is probally 7200rpm but you could get a 10,000rpm and it would be much faster

also try this
go to start, then run and type MSCONFIG
and then go to start up and delete things there that are familiar but you dont want them on ur computer
dont erase what you dont know

run these two programs

Do all this

Clean Up Computer
===============
Download and run superantispyware. I was put onto this program because of an annoying popup (XP or Vista plus all OS preceding)

http://www.superantispyware.com
Superantispyware is a good program and remember to update it before scanning. A scan may take 45mins.

afterwards clean up the registry with this
Clean up pc and IE
==============
To clean up run this Microsoft’s windows live program. It does registry, spyware , virus , disk clean up and defrag

It takes 2 hours or more so once it starts to load x file of x you can leave the computer and go to bed etc.

Run the full safety scanner, then at the end of the scan it asks you to set it running full time.

Think twice about setting it to run in the background as it could be another thing to slow you down. However, it may be worth while if you have no other security programs running.

Consider the following options:
I personally run Norton 360 which is full internet security and run superantispyware when I want to.

So if you don’t have a decent internet security program then perhaps run the superantispyware with your antivirus in the background.

If you sick of antivirus programs that don’t work perhaps run onecare full time and run superantispyware whenever.

Now you should be flying and Onecare has even set up a new system restore point for you.

Note onecare does other stuff as well. Click on the menus on the LHS column.

Another thing you could try is disk cleanup. If you get downloads from your email that you look at regularly, they could be sitting around some where idly using up your CPU. If you can't find it, click on the Start menu, go to search, and type in Disk Cleanup. Other than that, you might want to have a tech-savvy friend come over and take a look at your program usage. I don't want to get into that too much, but you could have a lot of programs running needlessly in the background. I don't know which ones to turn off, but if you can find someone who does that would help a lot.

Hope your computer simmers down soon, Frank.

Download an anti-spyware program and use it frequently. My favorite is Spybot-S&D, which is available for free download. Chances are you have some sort of spyware which is slowing your computer down. Also, if you installed any programs recently, those programs could be running in memory, taking your computer's resources.

Maybe some software is taking too much memory.
open and close all the softwares you have separately, to see which one seems to occupy more memory.

Also use a reliable anti-virus, anti-spyware software to see if there are any viruses or anything harmful, as such good for nothing programs can wreak havoc one of it using a lot of memory.

Have you done a security scan? Have you gone through options-delete histories, cookies, anything else? Usually works for me. Also, go through windows explorer and delete any programs and downloads you don't want anymore.
