Unlike the first answer, i think wrestling fans are MORE demanding. The wrestling world needs more promotions today...Not to steal talent from, but to develop talent, and if a contract is up, then negotiate like in sports...It would bring the talent status in EVERY fed back up....

Lack of promotions is one contributing factor to this, mainly because the WWE (like TNA) cannot develop every single person that wants to wrestle for them into a good gimmick and mold their character. The WWE still does help with that, but everyone can't be done.
One other reason, in my eyes, is that the WWE is not finding anyone that fits their demographic or wrestling style. These days, a lot of professional wrestlers that are skilled are not very tall or muscular, nor do they leave people "awe struck" like back in the day. Also, these days, a lot of wrestlers (especially lighter, shorter guys) rely on spots to get them over, which is not what the WWE is about. The WWE is much slower in pace than other organizations (in terms of matches), and there is a lot more "storytelling" in the WWE than in other organizations.

You make a good point King. The lack of competition for the WWE has a direct effect on the lack of talent. Plus, I just don't think some of the newer wrestlers have respect or heart for the business. No matter how much talent you have, if your heart isn't in it, it's not going to work.

First of all,WWE is looking more for guyz which are gonna impress the kids and guyz that will be able to make an impression with the storylines..
They are looking more for good actors than for good wrestlers...The wrestlers do not train that hard because the WWE don't need them as awesome wrestlers...Even if a good wrestler come to the WWE it is impossible to have success if they lack of ideas for him like happend with Ultimo Dragon..
Wrestling and wrestlers generally are nowhere near to the level of the 80's...

I think it's because there looking for more monsters/freaks, lets take a look at who weve got recently.
Boogeyman
Hornswoggle
Umada
Big Daddy V
The Great Khali
And only about 2 of those wrestlers are interesting or good at wrestling. WWE is trying to give the image to the kids that "Good will always triumph over evil." And how else to do that then to get big huge monsters?

Back when territories were around, there was plenty of talent to go around. Each of those territories would constantly bring in new wrestlers to build them up.
WWE had plenty of places to take talent from.
Now a days, WWE only has TNA, ROH and their own developmental territories to take talent from. Well, with TNA and ROH focused more on smaller wrestler, WWE doesn't have much choice but to rely on their own system.
Problem is, they're pulling up these guys way too fast.
Look at Dykstra, Rhodes, DH Smith, the Majors, McIntyre, Knox, etc. They're all young. They're all not experienced enough for the big leagues.

More Promotions means more wrestlers hired, More wrestlers hired means more diamonds in the rough found. Its simple. As Big as the WWE is it can`t pick up everyone that wants to be a wrestler. Given chances elsewhere someone might develop enough to get on the WWE radar.

now a days it is all about how you look and will you sell merchandise...i can remember when wrestling was wrestling and not body builders and models......you actually had good matches and feuds....there was a few that had good body's but the most of them was just average joe's and was in great physical shape and could put on a good show.....now in the day of roids Vince thinks bigger is better which is not always true....as far as finding talent they need to try to go to more of the wrestling schools besides their own and check out the talent....i am sure it is out there but they just don't look hard enough.......

In entertainment, it's hard to stay at the top of your game for a very long time, and impossible to stay there indefinetely. Look at extremely popular television shows like Mash, Cheers, Seinfeld, and Friends, etc... they have a huge run and then it starts getting old - principles want to move on to other things (Like the The Rock, Hulk Hogan, etc). Popularity and success just becomes impossible to sustain.
Wrestling has been popular (and profitable) since the 80's and that's close to a 30 year run... pretty good all things considered.
