Word translations seem to be a big problem in todays world. I have a feeling that the "traditions" of yesteryear have been lost in translation over the centuries.
What are your thoughts regarding presents vs presence?
Do you think people have gone too far away from the real meaning of Christmas & other Holidays?

i think you are right -- example -- we are expecting up to 8 inches of snow this evening -- when i was growing up and we had a snow like this -- us boys who was old enough would get the shovels and go out and clean off sidewalks and pathways to senior houses -- we did not expect money since we were taught that was the thing to do === now tomorrow if i expect my nieces to come across the way to clean me a path i will be waiting till spring -- in fact since i have the equipment i not only clean my way out but be expected to dig them out to!!! but i think the thing that really scares me is how people will charge so much on credit cards and never really get xmass paid for till june or july!!! i would rathe have a box of home made cookies than see somo one go into debt to buy me a gift!!!!

I think Madison Avenue and all the other Commercial interests would like us to be!

I believe it all depends on who you are with and how you want to celebrate. Values tend to dictate here. If a person values money then they celebrate materialistically. If a person values people or values the meaning of Christ being the reason for this season - then they do things to emphasize that.

I value people over things, but it took a while to get to this point of view. It helps that money is not totally tight anymore like it was when our kids were small. I wanted to give them more things than we could, but I see they turned out just fine without them. I am grateful I will get to see the people I love for Christmas, that is all I really want to have.

Absolutely!!! And, thank you for saying this !!

As I say this, I feel badly as my presence can't afford to be in as
many places as I would like it to be. The phone will have to suffice in many of these places. And I have also found, that while there in presence, it was truly was not appreciated either. So it's a mixed bag my friend. Just do what your heart tells you and be happy with knowing you have done the best you could.

I gotta go with Mr. Ed!!! Saying "Merry Christmas" is a no-no!! The true meaning is gone. In the malls it's "Happy Holidays"!!!They more or less did this when they made them quit praying in school and now it's all commerical! Just like funerals, send me flowers while I'm alive not when I'm dead!!!!

No, I see the Spirit of Christmas everywhere I go.
I see people riding motorcycles with Toys strapped on to the back seat thousands of bikers.....
I see children walking into school with extra food , with last years coat to donate..
I watch as families take names of other families to make sure they will have a Christmas from a long list.....
.Teenagers baking cookies and practicing carols to sing for
strangers.......
I watch a little boy in the mall looking for the special gift for
his mother
I hear the little girl ask Santa to bring her father home from
Iraq and Santa say a little pray her father makes it home to
her...........I watch the world light up their house with lights and
trees, nativity scenes.....turkeys being unload from big trucks
so friends and families can seat down to a turkey dinner......I
see love, generosity,
I see the meaning of Christmas isn't it
beautiful....I watch as grandfather buy a Christmas book
of "The Nativity" to read to his grandchildren and women
looking for the right color of candles for the advent wreath......

How can you go to far when you tell someone you love them!!!!!
