I am a 49 year old, third generation Arkansan who survived Huckabee's terms of governor and I was SO glad when he left. I've been stunned to realize that he has achieved any prominence or consideration to be the leader of the United States. It scares me, quite frankly. His legacy and record are all slick rhetoric followed by pandering to a fundamentalist fan base.
The environment suffered greatly under his administration..civility and respect for diversity suffered..every aspect of social, educational and economic advancement that had happened under Clinton was set back. ( Under Clinton, education and the economy had a major upswing, the environment suffered..but this is ridiculous what's happened SINCE! )The fundies had a field day while he was governor.
He supported and convinced voters to deny homosexuals rights to have civil marriages
He supports refusing them the right to foster children
He refused to meet with animal welfare groups who had been petitioning to make animal cruelty a felony. Arkansas is now one of only seven states that consider deliberate, malicious acts of cruelty to animals a misdemeanor offense.
His "covenant marriage act" that he lauded as such a wonderful victory for families is now chosen by a miniscule number of new couples marrying beause of the hardships it places on women in abusive relationships seeking divorce!
http://marriage.about.com/od/covenantmarriage/Covenant_Marriage.htm < read here about covenant marriages and the pitfalls
Here are some pages to check Huckabee's record. http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/huckabees_fiscal_record.html( also do a search on Huckabee at factcheck and these items appear:
Huckabee claimed he would “abolish the IRS.” He failed to mention that he’d replace it with another big tax bureaucracy.
Huckabee said he had proposed to make children of illegal aliens eligible for Arkansas scholarships if they "had been in our schools their entire school life.” Actually, the proposal required only three years in Arkansas schools.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee praised a "fair tax" but failed to note that it would ease the burden on the richest Americans while imposing a stiff retail sales tax of perhaps 34 percent. Whether thie proposal he said he supported is "fair" or not is of course a matter of opinion. In fact, President Bush's bipartisan Advisory Panel on Tax Reform rejected the idea, saying it would substantially increase taxes for 80 percent of U.S. taxpayers while benefiting those at the top. The panel calculated that a sales tax would have to be set at 34 percent of retail sales prices to bring in the same revenue as the taxes it would replace, meaning that an automobile with a retail price of $10,000 would cost $13,400 including the new sales tax.
LOOK HERE also to see if what he supported in 2002 is what you want for your president..( He refused to answer the questions to these issues again in 2007) http://votesmart.org/npat.php?can_id=1657 < Project Vote Smart
Here it indicates when given the choices of supporting either k) Support age-appropriate sexual education programs that teach about abstinence, contraceptives, and HIV/STD prevention methods.
or
l) Support abstinence-only sexual education programs.
He chose the abstinence only sexual education program.
I went to school in the 60s and 70s and we learned about STD's THEN! I can recall learning that a girl in my very own class figured out she HAD an STD from watching the film in high school that taught about it. I cannot imagine a responsible parent, yet alone responsible leader not wanting a populace that is educated about our own bodies.
Is he afraid if children and teens learn about contraception and STDs that it encourages sex in that population? ( if so, he is also too ignorant to be the leader of the U.S. )
Can the U.S. afford a President whose science literacy is so low that he believes that creationism is a legitimate *alternative* to a scientific theory?
For a time I just wrote off the popularity of Huckabee among the vocal Christian conservatives in Arkansas a reflection of our states lower educational and economic status..but now that I see his rise in popularity in the general populace it downright terrifies me to think I live in a nation that is heading into the dark ages, educationally, socially and morally.
Here is one of the more outrageous and frightening legacies of Mike Huckabee..regarding animal cruelty issues. Please read this,http://hslf.typepad.com/political_animal/2007/12/the-presidentia.html then tell me, after all I've pointed out..Is this a man of compassion, ethics, intelligence, sound judgement and one who would safeguard our Constitution for the rights of all citizens?
It feels like the right wing agenda is leading our nation to hell in a handbasket and all I can do is look on with horror.
The next presidential campaign disturbs me because there isn't any candidate I really like..but there is ONE that simply horrifies me at the thought of any possibility of him becoming our President.
If this is an episode of the Twilight Zone, I sure need a commercial break about now.

It's a shame that Mike Huckabee is not a frontrunner, he's a highly qualified candidate (ditto Chris Christie).

Huckabee is -interesting-. The other Republican candidates are shying away from the Religious Right this time around (or perhaps it's the other way around) so Huckabee has been able to carve out a niche for himself there, as the Christian candidate. But he doesn't agree with a lot of the standard 'conservative' social and economic principles of the Religious Right. I give him credit there, for being independent enough not to just parrot the old party cliches, to have the courage to think for himself and speak his mind.
He comes off very well too, in an interview. He's been on Daily Show several times and he gives a good account of himself. I really like that in a candidate. I think he is relatively honest as politicians go. Even though I don't agree with him, I find honesty in a candidate very unexpected these days, it makes a good impression on me.
The thing is, I don't think a Christian candidate can win. The REAL agenda of the GOP is not really the 'values' agenda, and I think Christians are beginning to realize how they've been exploited by the GOP all these years (I hope so anyway). The REAL God of the GOP is Mammon. Jesus said it himself: You can't serve two masters.
Also the Republican candidate for president is not really picked by the voters. The voters are allowed to vote for the candidate the party leaders pick beforehand. If Huckabee does well in the polls they will slime him, as they did with John McCain in 2000 (and notice how different McCain sounds today!)

I am no fan of the crazy Liberals. I am also no fan of a False Conservative. Mike Huckabee talks the talk, he falls as he tries to walk the walk.
I suppose I risk insulting you by saying it is quite foolish to elect a fellow that believes Creationism qualifies as a Scientific Theory, Mike Huckabee does.
True, old school Conservatism lies with Ron Paul, he is the only Republican I know of that has the track record, integrity(been married over 50 years,no divorce);and has knowledge to save the GOP.

we could examine the entire substitute. "you realize, Michael, between the flaws it extremely is troubling is that folk see a Natalie Portman or another Hollywood starlet who boasts of, 'hi look, you realize, we are having babies, we at the instant are not married, yet we are having those babies, and that they are doing in simple terms high quality,'" Huckabee reported. "yet there are not extremely a good number of single mothers available who're making thousands and thousands of greenbacks each 3 hundred and sixty 5 days for being in a action picture." maximum single mothers are very unfavourable, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government counsel, their little ones could be ravenous to loss of lifestyles and not have wellbeing care. and that's the story that we at the instant are not seeing, and it extremely is unlucky that we glorify and glamorize the belief of out-of-babies wedlock," Is what he reported so undesirable. besides he's a preacher, of direction he will denounce it. Atleast he's no longer turn floping on it. he's on a sturdy stance.

He is a nice guy. Thats about all you can say to compliment the man. His record is horrible. If you notice him in debates, he has no substance, he just says flowery one liners and makes people feel positive about him. But he doesnt have a vision.
He was asked what he hoped to accomplish within the first year of his administration. He said the first thing to do is bring everyone together. It sounds nice, but Bush tried to bring people together for 7 years. He was stabbed in the back every time he tried. The perfect example is the no child left behind act. He let Ted Kennedy write it, and its a piece of trash. And Kennedy attacks Bush for the bill he wrote.
Huckabee doesn't have any substance to him. That is why he is trying to spring the religion attacks on Romney. He is atleast smart enough not to do it directly too often, but let's face it, there just isnt that much to Huckabee other than a repeat of Jimmy Carter.

You need to do more research. Huckabee has a record of tax hikes (an estimated half a billion dollars) and favoring amnesty for illegal immigrants (including supporting a measure giving them drivers licenses).. he was already under investigation for ethics violations.. and his pardoning of a rapist is coming back to haunt him. In a prior debate he stated that he would enter a war with Iran without the consent of Congress and if elected he will raise taxes and sink the US into more debt..

I'm neither Mormon nor Baptist. Huckabee was in the top 3 for me, but after that low comment about Mormonism, he's out of the running in my book. I refuse to consider a leader who does not respect other religions.

He's the current Republican frontrunner. I never thought a candidate would come along who would be more dangerous than Giuliani, but Huckabee is that candidate. I hope he loses decisively, as America does not need to become a theocracy.
