Sure they are. My dog knows that if she doesn't sit her butt down on that floor she aint gonna get her food. Same as if there is a baby in the house she won't jump around and play with it like anyone else, she is gentle and protective. How would she know to change her behavious for someone she has never met if she didn't think about it. That seems rational to me.

Of course. Just conduct this simple experiment... Crush the body of an ant and drop it next to its companions. The companions will panic and freak out. That's a very rational response.
