I fit the above description with the exception of dreading the Holidays. I do not celebrate Christmas - it is just another day to me. However, on occasion (4 times) I have gone to the local Mission and served meals to the homeless so that my Christian friends can spend Christmas with their families. You see - you do not have to be a Christian to be a good person. Hope you enjoy your Holidays! CJ

I know of a lot of people like this... it's so depressing for them. Trying to bring them out of this kind of depression is like pulling teeth from a Rhino! I make sure my friends know my door is always open and there is always room for them to come join us when ever they want... not just during the holidays! We even offer taxi service!
After spending so many years in my old occupation I can tell you that the bars will be full of folks who can afford to be there, otherwise, they are at home alone with a bottle! They do try to be festive, it's just very very hard when you are alone!

I think some truly elderly seniors dread the holidays and have relatives who care about them. They have lost so many loved ones over the years. Christmas brings back memories of when they were still alive. The same as some who are not so elderly but have experience the loss of loved ones.
It's one of the drawbacks to living a very long life.

I have no family here, they live in another state. Instead of having a pity party, I am on call for local fires in the area with Red Cross, last year I administered the hurricane recovery program in DC so others could be home with their familes.
Seeing others in such devastation makes me appreciate what I have even more, It is the celebration of Christs birth, not the commercialized version seen in ads and TV.

My family is in Chicago and my kids are in another part of the State (CA) but I still love the Christmas season. I bake and send to family and friends. I see the kids for a day or two and sometimes have a "Orphan's Christmas" here at my place. We have a pot luck dinner, drinks, and watch football.
I refuse to wallow in loneliness. I'm making NEW traditions.

If we are home for any holiday we usually ask a few friends who are old bachelors to join us. And even send food and goodies home with them. Better than them sitting in the one bar in town that never closes.

I may sit at home and imbibe one or two myself, but in the main, I am tired of all the hoopla and congestion of the winter holidays. Some of the easier holidays I can take slowly, but not this fast paced driving around at the last minute trying to please ungrateful brats who want to abuse everyone around themselves all year round and expect and demand they get everything they want handed to them and who get frustrated when they don't get what they want on the one day of the year they should be thankful that some one actually cares about them. Just my rant folks, just my rant.

Yes loneliness is a problem at any time of the year.
The memory of fun times only enhances that melancholy feeling.
Please do something, make friends.
Plan to visit some exotic destination or events.
Planning is the important part.

Wow! Some of these responses have really given me insights into how to deal with feeling lonely. I am grateful for this! However, I do know people who desire very much, to have someone around them during the Chrismas celebration. For these, I pray that God will bless them with peace of heart and mind. It hurts me so to see those who are lonely and in need of human companionship!
For those of you who know this feeling, I would like to ask that you join me in praying for our fellow brothers and sisters who are hurting, this very season! May God bless them and bring joy to the lives wh are in need, throughout the year!
MERRY CHRISTMAS and GOD BLESS

like i have said before i know folks who are more lonely in crowds than i am am when i am by alone -- it took a while for my family to realize that when i moved back here a few years ago -- at first they tried to get me involved in every thing but soon learn to my pleasure that some folks just do not care for all the noise and fake happiness that they want to pass out!!!
