Living life in the fast lane allows you the ability to adapt when unexpected things happen, and makes you a survivor because all the things that happened made you stronger. But, playing it safe keeps you out of trouble and it gives you more time to think and do things slowly so that you can make reasonable decisions. Which do you think is the better approach, and why?

How about a nice balance between the two.

Fast lane implies a lot of wreckless, risky behavior. I didn't shoot drugs or have a lot of unprotected sex, but I tried to keep up with the big guys in karate, and I could hold my liquor better than any frat boy (a concept that now is lost on me). For fun, I went caving (never been a big fan of sunlight).

I burned the candle at both ends. College, great GPA, two jobs, president of a very busy student group. When I wasn't working, I was playing very hard. It was the 80s, and club life was slam dancing and staying up all night, lots of coffee (and alcohol). Hanging with friends were piercing parties and marathon road trips.

My first therapist asked me what I was running from, and I didn't know what she was talking about. Now I know. Arthritis, liver and kidney damage, and my spinal column is wrecked. (Stage diving should be for stunt men only.) Apparently, I didn't know I'd live this long.

Balance may not seem like as much fun when you are younger, but if you're not careful, you won't be ABLE to keep up when you are older. Fortunately, I still don't look my age, unless you are my chiropracter and are looking at my x-rays). Ten years ago, I married a handsome and charming guy (eight years younger than he thinks I am), and it's got a lot going on. But I can't keep up with him.

Balance--it's braver than you think.

Living in the fast lane causes you to miss important things and forget important people. It makes you twice as likely to get in an accident, get ulcers, and overbook yourself. You KEEP GOING because you HAVE to, not because you SHOULD.

Taking the same route but at a more relaxed speed allows you to SEE and hear things more clearly, allowing you TIME to ACT, instead of Mr. Speedy who spends most of the time REACTING.

Obviously, running full speed through life is NOT the better approach.

Many people are not designed to live life in the fast lane.
Some people are.
You should live life as you want to so that you are happy.
Playing it safe should have nothing to do with it.

Why can't we change lanes every now and then? When we have energy and are feeling good, the fast lane beckons... but there are times when we are tired and less energetic, that's when the fast lane may not be safe.

You have no choice. You will do what you feel compelled to do no matter how much you anguish over it. That is your fate. Che sera.

I don't think either is always the better choice.

i think it depends both on the situation and the individual.
