Did you put a 1 gig stick in one slot?
It probably only supports 2 512MB sticks

It is not to bad as long as you don't turn off your computer while updating. Go to the motherboard manufactures website and download the BIOS update. Insert the floppy, CD or flash drive with the software loaded. Restart your computer. Go into the BIOS. The startup screen or manual will tell you what key to press to get in. Set your device as the first boot device. Save your changes restart and follow the on screen instructions. After you are done reset your device as the second or theird boot device.

The mobo might not take 1gb in a slot take back or sell the ram and get sets of 256mbs. I recommend upgrading the pc to a newer on. They have cheap refurbished p4s for like 140dollars if money is a problem. Even 512 is alot.

You have to go to the motherboard's manufacturer website and find the drivers section for that motherboard. Download the latest bios update and follow instructions on creating a boot disk. Once you have your boot disk, reboot the computer and start up from the boot disk. You should see instructions that will guide you through updating of the BIOS which is usually automatic once you hit a key.

Hope this helps.
