I have two computers at home in the same room that I want connected to the internet, but not simultaneously. I want it where I can switch connections between computers, instead of having them both connected at the same time.

Currently, when I want to switch between computers, I have to unplug one from the cable modem, and plug the other into it. I want to be able to do this at the push of a button instead.

Well frined, i won't know why you want to switch the connection all the time, why can't yo share the internet connection

all you need to do is
If the computer having the modem is XP, just enable internet sharing on this computer and even enable file & sharing in network proerties.

Then other computer connected to this machine should be able to get the necessary network parameters from the first machine and be able to connect to the Net.

I believe the fairly some comments. there is no such factor as a Ethernet Cable type "composite", there is one referred to as a crossover cable, that connects 2 laptop ports jointly to permit communication between the computers, or to connect 2 routers/switches/bridges jointly making use of a dedicated speed and duplex. A change could artwork, yet a change/bridge won't artwork if the provider provider basically supplies one IP handle on your laptop, if so you like an low fee router, like a G type router and turn off the instant. The router delivers one MAC handle to the provider provider and basically desires one IP handle from the provider. The router will supply private IP addresses to the computers. if your settlement with the provider provider facilitates extra advantageous than one IP handle then the change will artwork in simple terms large. The device which you get carry of is a splitter that is used for telephone type provider. nonetheless it fairly is conceivable to create custom cables which will enable 2 computers to hook up with 2 ports on a router or change, yet you like 2 RJ-40 5 plugs on each and each end of your cable, fairly you may prefer 2 of the splitters, a conventional Ethernet cable making use of all the 8 wires in a CAT 5/5e/6 cable, and four cables making use of basically 4 wires interior the CAT 5/5e/6 cable. yet you have presented 2 unreliable products of equipment because of the fact the splitters have a tendency to make undesirable connections via the years, because of the shortcoming of cable tension alleviation, and circulation of the cables. that's not a configuration that i might advise, it fairly is extra concern than it fairly is well worth.

I don't understand why, but....

The only thing I can think of is having both computers connected at the same time through a router and using a firewall on the computer you don't want connected to block all internet activity.

They make switches for that sort of thing, easier to use a program though.Install said program on both computers and with a click of the mosue you connect or disconnect.Or you could attempt a force ip on each computer using same ip,and tell your router/modem that second instance of that ip has priority.

Unless that "Button" is attached to an arm that will unplug from one PC and plug into the other ... you'll just have to stop being lazy

There is no way to do this. You really need a router, then they can both connect.
