http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purgatory
Purgatory is, according to Roman Catholic teaching, the process of purification by which, those who die in God’s grace and friendship achieve the holiness necessary for heaven.[1] More generally, the word "Purgatory" is often used to refer to any place or condition of suffering or torment especially one that is temporary. [2]
Within Catholicism, Purgatory is also called the "final purification of the elect". Catholics are taught that Purgatory is experienced only by those souls judged by God at the moment of death to be destined for heaven, and only by those that are not yet perfectly holy. Purgatory involves temporal punishment for venial sin[3], which is entirely different from the eternal punishment of the damned in hell.[4]
Why the notion of going back to nothing is not included is probably a terrorist tactic. Becoming into existence, the becoming 'something' is not a notion accepted as it prescribes nothingness as a real beginning 'in the beginning' as in Genesis.

Purgatory is a type of hell in and of its self; if you believe that being in the absence of gods presence is the purest form of hell.
When you have been freed of "sin" you leave purgatory and go to heaven.

Once you enter purgatory you are automatically guaranteed Heaven. The person above me is lying. Go to catholicanswers.com and see what they have to say. Purgatory is for people who die with sin after they die. It is a cleansing process that purifies them to sainthood. In my belief we all strive to become saintlike. But since not many of us do that we must endure time in purgatory to be one. People think it contradicts Jesus sacrifice for us on our cross but it absolutely doesn't. like i said if ur interested go search on that site and see what they say. I read a book about a saint who had souls from purgatory appear to him in his church so he could pray for them. Souls in purgatory get let out when people pray for them. He said their sweat almost burned through his skin when it dropped on him. There is some suffering in purgatory but its not some extreme hell like suffering. By the way the saint was Padre Pio. He also received the stigmata

I think Purgatory is a waiting room for Heaven. You do your time, your penance and reflection on your mistakes and then you enter the pearly gates. I think if you're hell-bound, you just go there directly. If you're truly evil and cruel and remorseless then you would go to hell (go directly to hell, do not pass GO, do not collect $200...sorry Monopoly flashback...)
At least that's what I heard...
I'm hoping to go straight to Heaven, without the waiting room!

Purgatory is hell. You either go there or heaven.
In hell they stamp your butt, not your hand.

Has you ever consider the possibility of heaven, hell and purgatory here and now on Earth? Don’t we suffer enough on this planet? Do you actually believe that God is so spiteful and vengeful that he prolongs our suffering after our death? What kind of petty god is this?

There is no such thing as purgatory. It's heaven or hell after our judgment. There is nothing in between, no grey area at all. It's simply black or white.
