All it takes is just creating webpages and selling them..I can do that. So why take the time to get my degree when I can just get right to it?

My fiance doesn't have a degree and he's a web developer. (Hint: That's what it's called, not webpage designer.)

But, it's not something you can just do. You need to actually have startup, business associates, investors...can you do all of that? The person who arranges that DOES need a degree, especially when it comes to the investors.

Anyone can design a webpage. Microsoft Word lets you export documents to HTML, and some websites are made that way.

I started my own web design and development company without any degree, and I did alright - not great, but alright. You'll find that you have more competitors than you might expect - and the sad part is that business owners often do not understand the technologies, so a talentless hack or plagiarist who knows how to sell himself will swoop on your projects and leave behind jaded, bitter customers.

If you have artistic talent, you'll probably do best as a graphic designer (doing websites, product packaging, et cetera) - better pay than just doing websites.

If you are more of a programmer, you really should go to school and pick up a relevant computer science degree - again, much better pay.

Creating Web Pages doesn't make any sense. Today anyone can create web pages.

Following a degree will take you to the next level of your creativity & development skills.

World is changing every moment, degree is a kind of an entry qualification.

There is also may have challenging people without degree.

Generally it's about people's interests.

You might be able to get by without one if you have a good portfolio, but you probably want a bachelor's in web design. An associate's might be enough, depending on how the demand and competition are in your area.

No, you don't need a degree. There are companies that offer web page designer certifications.

would you take your car to a mechanic who has a degree in it or one that doesn't?

Don't get me wrong, both can do the same job, it's just proof that you can do it.

You can create webpages and sell them, but 1000's of people do it, so what separates you from them?

a degree is a good idea to have, but it's not necessary.

depends on how you want to approach clients ... if you have a few websites up and running as examples ... you should be ok (providing you're any good) otherwise you'd be expecting people just to take your word that you know what you're doing ... the degree lets others know that you have qualifications
