There is such a thing as holding a baby too much. If you don't believe me, ask a pediatrition. When my first child was a baby I held him all the time. When I needed to put him down for a few minutes he would cry hysterically for no reason (diaper was changed, he was fed, ...etc.) I questioned a pediatrition and told him the situation. He informed me to put my child down in sight of me when I was doing things. At first he cried, but within two weeks he stopped this. All I did was stay within sight at first and talked to him. I also would play with his hand or kiss his cheek, but I didnt pick him up (even though it was killing me to hear him cry like that). Today he is fifteen and a very good, confident kid who knows he is loved. Moral: you won't harm him for letting him cry a little.

Your baby sounds as though he has colic. My niece had her baby last January and I could find her in the post partum area of the hospital because her baby screamed and cried consistently from the minute she was born. except for maybe 1/2 hour intervals for the 1st 7 months of her life. She cried so much my niece had to bring her to me at 3 am to babysit and my daughter stayed with her for 3 weeks to help out. It became a whole family event. She finally stopped crying about 2 months ago and does much better now. She will be 1 yr old Jan 26. She ended up having to see a specialist in colicy babies and a helper came to see her a couple times. They said she was just a colicy baby.

Have you seen a doctor about this? Even perhaps a psychiatrist?
Certainly doesn't sound normal to me. But if you haven't consulted either of the above recommended, either because you can't afford it or just simply don't want to for whatever reason, then I would recommend that you hold him as much as you are capable, without coming to hate him. Something is very wrong.

Yes, he cries when he's not being held because he needs to be held. If you're trying to set him down so you can get other things done around the house, you might want to try a sling.

Babies learn very quickly how things work. When he cries you pick him up. He has learned this and cries to keep you holding him. You need to break him of this. How long does he cry if you do not pick him up? He needs to cry a little before you come running.

Cuddle time! Do you have a snuggle pack? My friends love them because they can keep their hands free (to a degree) and still carry the baby around. there are different types - slings, front packs, snuggly back packs. That might be a solution because I know it can be tiring (I don't have kids but my friends who have young ones find them sooo useful).
Cheers!
