Why is it possible for some chemical families to have metals, nonmetals, and metalloids?

If families share similar properties, how is it possible that metals, nonmetals, and metalloids are in the same family? thanks : )

All the time and twice on tuesday. Check the group with carbon (silicon, gernamium, tin, lead)
or boron (aluminum, titanium, etc.), or start with phosphorous (arsenic, antimony, etc.)
