Microsoft DirectX is a collection of application programming interfaces for handling tasks related to multimedia, especially game programming and video, on Microsoft platforms. Originally, the names of these APIs all began with Direct, such as Direct3D, DirectDraw, DirectMusic, DirectPlay, DirectSound, and so forth. DirectX, then, was the generic term for all of these Direct-something APIs, and that term became the name of the collection. Over the intervening years, some of these APIs have been deprecated and replaced, so that this naming convention is no longer absolute. In fact, the X has caught on to the point that it has replaced Direct as the common part in the names of new DirectX technologies, including XAct, XInput, and so forth. Additionally, when Microsoft decided to develop game consoles based on DirectX, the X stuck, leading to the name Xbox (and later Xbox 360).

DirectX 10 ships with and is only compatible with Windows Vista; previous versions of Windows cannot run DirectX 10-exclusive applications.

And DirectX 10 is only software. Its a program. Not something like a graphics card or hard drive.

Well, DirectX 10, is the latest version of DirectX from Microsoft.

It's software that make 3D graphics look better, and if your graphic card support it, you can really see an improvment in 3d gaming.

"Microsoft DirectX is a collection of industry-leading graphics technologies designed to deliver the most advanced, stable, and visually impressive graphics experience on Microsoft platforms", with Microsoft words.

But even they called the latest version DiorectX 10, actually the lattese version is Version: 9.21.1148 of November 2007.

Was for Vista and XBOX when first released but also windows XP users can install it.

"Adding a DirectX® 10 card to a PC running Windows Vista is like turbocharging your gaming experience. Existing games (most of which were written using DirectX® 9) get world class performance, while unlocking the new generation of gaming graphics with DirectX® 10 optimized games." (from microsoft web page).

So if you want to unlock all the features from DirectX 10, you must have a compatible graphic card too.

To see a list of ghraphic cards that support DirectX go here:

Also to get full advantage of DirectX 10, games must support it.

That's all you need to know about DirectX 10.

directx 10 has got to do with the graphics processing in applications and games. It currently has no use whatsoever. Games are going to integrate things that only work with it progressively. In some games you will only miss some "effects" if you don't have it in others it just won't work.

Nothing good requires vista right now. Same can be said for directx 10.
