Empath is a person with empathy or understanding another's postion free of personal emotion done by putting yourself in their position. So if you have said 'I know how you feel " or "i am with you there" your already part way there. A lot more would make the whole world a better place!

Pinch yourself. If you feel something, you are not an empath. The term empath is used for a fictional character capable of feeling the emotions of another in ways and degrees far beyond human capacity. Some such characters do more than just feel your pain; they feel it instead of you feeling it.
Empathy as a human activity varies among individuals, but can be developed and cultivated. Keys are a willingness to care about others, to experience extremes of emotion, and to work at improving your skill at recognizing the emothions of others.
