Because they have so many departments and products, RETAILER is really the best fit as far as term or category. But where Im from we just refer to it all in a vague way by saying "Im going to THE STORE" or we simply use its name and dont bother trying to categorize it by adding grocery or department or other descriptive terms to it. "I went to TARGET" etc.

They are mass merchandisers.

A mass merchandiser is a large store that primarily sells household items, electronic goods, and apparel, but also offers food products, typically at discount prices.

Wikipedia calls them discount department stores, and if you read the about sections on their websites, they refer to themselves as places of "discount shopping", so I would say discount department store would be the best term.

retail store---just noticed...another BRILLIANT reference from Wikepedia....the world's most informative information center if you want to appear to know something in front of your less educated friends. Walmart and Target are Retail stores...not department stores...they are more upscale. Walmart should be avoided because they have been avoiding taxes for many years, thanks to the current administration who feels rich ppl don't need to pay taxes...the poor and middle class can handle that just fine.
