Here are my Top 10 things I like to do when my budget is tight:

1. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
465 Huntington Ave, Boston, MA
Take a stroll through the city's largest museum on Wednesdays after 4pm, when admission is a voluntary contribution.

2. Arnold Arboretum
125 Arborway, Jamaica Plain, MA
From smooth rollerblading paths to organized nature walks, the area's best nature spot offers loads of free outdoor activities. (In good weather, of course!)

3. Harvard Square
JFK St at Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA
Hip shops, affordable ethnic restaurants and eclectic street performers make this a natural people-watching paradise.

4. Pizzeria Regina
11 1/2 Thacher St, Boston, MA
Wait outside in line for a table at the North End's legendary pizzeria.

5. The Middle East
472 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA
Support the area's music scene by catching an up-and-coming indie band or a smaller, local act.

6. Boston Duck Tours
100 Huntington Ave (Prudential Center), Boston, MA
Take in the city from a whole new perspective--on the Charles, in a duck boat, surrounded by tourists.

7. Durgin Park
340 Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Boston, MA
Eat like Paul Revere and enjoy classic Yankee cuisine like Boston baked beans and Indian pudding.

8. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
280 Fenway, Boston, MA
A collection of works by European masters assembled by one of Boston's most remarkable figures.

9. New England Aquarium
Central Wharf, Boston, MA
Kids and grownups alike get a kick out of spying on exotic sea-dwellers.

10. Museum of Science--Mugar Omni Theatre
1 Science Park, Boston, MA
A 180-degree screen makes seeing an Imax movie here an engulfing experience.

P.S. If I was heading south, I'd go to the Providence Place mall. You can browse through the shops, watch a movie, and get a bite to eat. In the summer, there's WaterFire -- a series of 100 bonfires on the river in the center of the city. http://www.waterfire.org/
