This answer may not satisfy you. The square root of 2 is the number that, when squared, equals 2.

It is an irrational number, that is, it cannot be written as a fraction. The Pythagoreans discovered irrational numbers. When they tried to find the length of the hypotenuse of a unit square, (a square in which each side is one unit in length), they did not get a rational number. It is said that the person who discovered this was drowned. The Pythagoreans took their math very seriously!

The square root of 2 can be approximated as a decimal to as many decimal places as you wish, but if is only an approximation. To seven decimal places it is 1.4142135.

Try multiplying that by itself and you will get very close to 2, but not exactly 2.

Take a square that is one unit length on all sides. Draw a line from one corner to the opposite corner. The length of this line is the square root of 2.

We usually leave it in a radical form sqrt(2).
If you need to know the value use a calculator or search the net for a method to find it. It is an old and a bit forgotten method, but if you are interested...
