If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.
First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.
http://www.delete-computer-history.com/what-is-the-best-registry-cleaner.html
2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:
1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.
3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"
Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs.
Hope this link helps. Shows you how to do everything step by step. You should get a least 60-120% more resources and speed
if you follow the tips.

I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. The best PC cleaner and antivirus program is PC Health Boost, it's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate.
It's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than nomal. Download it here for free: http://www.pcboostsoftware.com

Have you scanned for Spyware? If not download, update and scan with Spybot and Adaware. How long since you ran a diskcleanup? Is your drive free from fragmentation? This disease can slow things down. Keep a check on frag levels and also on the free space.

You do not have enough information in your question to get a really good reply.
Is it a PC ? y/n.
Is it running Windows XP Home, XP Pro, XP media center??
Is it reading in video from antenna or cable???
Now I assume you are running XP.....
Go to the device manager.....
Start >> Control Panel >> System (in classic view)
First tab shows CPU type and speed.
Intel has a CPU ID utility program on its website, and a
CPU frequency (speed ) utility too.
Intel CPU'd LAPTOPS have speed step that slows down to
save battery when idle.... THEY don't slow down when on
line power.
Symantec / Norton NIS or Anti-Virus can bring a Pentium 3
1.0 GHZ to a stand still if it's on cable TV based broadband due to Anti-virus updates. Same goes for Windows updates, and Google Updater.
>>>Google Updater will restart itself in the background even if you kill it manually in the task manager !!! Surprise!!!
VISTA Aero is still having major problems and can get "Lost"
in the video driver.......
LAST go to the last tab in System and increase the virtual
memory // page swap file size.....
goodluck

if you have too many virus programs on your computer one or more of them may be incompatible with another one. also, spyware and viruses are not the only problems that can go wrong. a lot of problems can arise in your registry, memory, and hard drive. try defragmenting your hard drive and try sacnning your registry memory, all your files, etc...that should help a lot

If you are running windows go to start-accessories-sytem tools- disk clean up and run that. And start-accessories-sytem tools-disk defragment and run that. To find out what is making your computer slow press control-alt-del and then go to process and sort the mem usage so it shows you the process that is using the most memory and if it is unimportant click it and click end process.

You should check your cookies. You can do this by searching cookies, then you need to delete the ones that are from websites that you don't have your password saved on. You can delete all of them but then you will need to save your password again. If this doesn't work try adding more ram.
