I experienced a problem with IE 7 constantly closing or shutting down with the error message that it had stopped responding - I searched everywhere on line and could not find any help whatsoever. I uninstalled the java rebooted and reinstalled the java and the problem was solved.

A friend also had the same problem with IE6 and that was solved by upgrading to IE7

There could be tons of reasons for IE shutting down.

You may want to simply go into the add/remove programs section of the control panel then click on the remove button and it should ask you if you would like to repair it.

You can also go into the Tools > Internet Options (preferences section) and reset IE to the defaults.

As for your antivirus. I do not know what you use or whether you have a complete suite that includes antispyware, antiadware, etc... or whether you have a product from a reliable vendor (mcafee, norton, etc) or whether you ignored some alert that disabled it unbeknownst to you...
I would suggest you double check these things as malware is always a possibility. Even with the best solution in place.. a wrong click ignoring an alert can infect a user.
If you have the CD for the antivirus program... they usually come with a command line scanner on them and if you are able to connect to the internet you could run a web based scan from symantec.com or trendmicro.com (but that's probably not an option right now).

If a repair doesn't work you can completely uninstall IE and then redownload it from Windows Update.

If you're not tech savvy I would advise you to find a reliable and qualified technician .. as this could be a very simple issue but in the wrong hands you could make it irrepairable.

Last resort would be to perform a system restore... however these will cause data loss.

You may want to reboot and hit F8 to go into safe mode... but instead of choosing safe mode choose the "last know good configuration" option... I would try this before a system restore.

Good Luck

Agree with Yankees. Firefox is probably by far the best browser as of today. Opera, Safari or IE? Not even close. I would go with Firefox anyday.

try deleting your cookies and temporary files.

if that doesn't work, it may be that you have a spyware attached to your internet explorer that is undetected.

to check, go to internet options in control panel, then go to programs tab, then manage add-ons. check the add-ons. if you see one that is either a bunch of random numbers or something you don't recognize, select it and click on disable.

i've come across this recently and it turned out to be a worm that was attaching to an external executable but the executable was gone so it was crashing.
