I'd suggest the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe, which you can read online http://www.online-literature.com/poe/ or download and read http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/p (go down the page until you find Poe and click on a story). His stories are creepy, but good.
You may also enjoy the short stories by O Henry, which usually have a twist to them. They are available online http://www.online-literature.com/o_henry/ or some are available to download and read http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/h (search for Henry).
There are more authors, many of whom wrote short stories. You'll find the authors http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/h or http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/ I like the short stories of Charles Dickens and Washington Irving, and you'll find them online. There are others by people like H.G. Wells and Leo Tolstoy, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, and many others.
You may also enjoy The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson, which is not available to read online.
If you like Christmas stories, I would recommend a series of books edited by Joe Wheeler, called Christmas in My Heart. It includes a lot of different stories by various authors, both known and unknown. The stories range from humorous to very touching.
You may also enjoy some of the Chicken Soup series of books.

Thomas B. Costain edited at least three collections of classic short stories--Stories to Remember, More Stories to Remember, and Read With Me. Then there's the Modern Library Giant collection Great Tales of Terror and the Suprnatural. Give them a try!

Hi Niles.
The best collection of short stories i've read in fifteen years was recently published by Joe Hill. The name of the book is 20th's century Ghosts. You can visit his web site at www.joehillfiction.com.

George Saunders' "In Persuasion Nation"
and Michael Chabon's "Werewolves in their Youth" are really good collections of short stories.
My all time favorite SHort fiction author is Julio Cortazar, an Argentinean, but here is a guy who has many of his stories posted online in English translation. One of my Favorites is "The Health of the Sick":

Try reading Terry Goodkind. Not thin books, but very good.
