New York City's uniquely high rate of public transit use makes it one of the most energy-efficient cities in the United States. Gasoline consumption in the city today is at the rate of the national average in the 1920s.

What is the rest of USA doing. Why public transports like buses are not too good in USA?
It is an opportunity for private players to start bus services and make money; save fuel. Look at Europe.

Americans like their independence and their suburban houses with lawns. Public transportation works best in areas with high density: lots of people living nearby. America is too spread out for bus service. European cities are much closer. Also, Europe has higher gas prices, which makes public transportation more attractive. However, cities on the east coast with higher density tend to have better public transportation.

In those cities, it's actually pretty good. Things might get confusing with the many agencies, but I'm sure you're used to it with all the First, Stagecoach, and Arriva stuff in the UK. Within the cities, just ride a transit bus. Between them, it's fun to ride a Greyhound bus, which is actually owned by First. Or splurge for a long-distance train.
