My son is 16 months old and does not even say one word anymore, but i have been told to wait until he is 18months and then they will assess him, all children are different,
My son went through the physical development really fast has this happened with your daughter?
they say they usually focus on either talking or walking that they cant normally learn both at the same time

It's too soon to worry about it. Some kids are just less apt to speak aloud.
My son was saying, "Hi, Dad" at 7 months and by 1 year was speaking in complete sentences and using big words like "Delicious." Turns out he's a prodigy at words (nothing else, though!)
When my daughter came around 3 years later, we had no idea how unusual our son's language was. People told us, but we didn't get it. Then we had a little girl who didn't say ANYTHING until she was 11 months, and then she would say only one word for a few days and then drop it and be silent for a few days, start in on a different word, then drop it, and so on. I thought she would NEVER speak. Even at 16,17 months, she hardly said a word at all and never put two together.
As you can imagine, after having my son first, I was beside myself with worry. Had her ears checked. Took her to Kindermusik, which helps with language development. Read and talked and sang to her all the time. Encouraged her. Rewarded her.
She didn't really start speaking until she was 19 months old, when my youngest was a month old. Her first sentence was, "Put the baby down."
Now she's 5 and she talks my ear off!
The youngest was somewhere in the middle. She started speaking in earnest when she was a little more than a year, but she liked pacifiers (my other two didn't), so we actually had to get her off of those before she started speaking.
If your daughter understands words, she's probably fine. If her ears have been checked & passed, don't worry. If she is addicted to a pacifier (like my youngest), consider weaning her off it by limiting it to bed & carseat only or something like that. But she's still well within the range of "normal."
BTW, my youngest sister didn't start speaking until she was 4 years old, and then she spoke like an adult using big words. Her IQ is in the 180s and she's an extreme perfectionist. Basically, she refused to talk until she was confident that she could speak perfectly well.

My daughter is 15 months old and she only said momma and dada at 12 months. At 13 months she started saying whats that and this month she said kittie. So she sounds normal to me. Give her time she will say more.

my daughter babbles dada all day long, she can say lots of words, but chooses to babble dada, not matter how much i talk to her sing to her read to her, dada appears to be her favorite word.. do you talk to her alot about dada? i know we do, cause my husband is at work alot we talk about "dada" things like dada is coming home, we'er cooking dinner for dada and us, and so on.. so maybe she says dada so much because i say dada so much..
Just a thought, i think she's fine, she'll start popping off with tons more words in no time.. my lil one is beginning to like saying NO and MINE as much as dada lol

My daughter is the same way. She understands many things, but her verbal communication hasn't kicked in yet.
Don't worry, every child is different. As long as she is able to understand simple word then don't be alarmed. Some kids don't really start talking till 18-24 months!

if she just turned one it is fine, children say thier first real word between ages 10 mo to 12 mo. then their vocabulary starts to pick up by 15 months she should be saying about ten words. keep reading to her, singing, and talking even if its about doing the dishes or cooking dinner the more she hears it the more she learns. good luck

She sounds right. My first son only had one word at 12 months. As long as you're interacting with her, she'll do just fine. It's within the range of normal for her to only say one or two words.

I wouldn't worry she will be fine, all 4 of my children were different in each way, one only walked when he was 16 months! give her some space, worry about it when she is 3 years old and still only saying that!

Babies progress differently. She is not behind developmentally. The most important indication of her speach capabilities up until age 2 is how much she UNDERSTANDS. You say she has good understanding, so don't worry! She will start talking soon.
