Amsterdam is not really a city where you can speak of "suburbs" as with New York, Paris or Tokyo...

"Suburbs" of Amsterdam (municipalities or villages close-by) would be: Hoofddorp, Amstelveen, Badhoevedorp, Zaanstad and even Almere could be considered a "suburb" of Amsterdam...

All these places are a lot cheaper to live in than Amsterdam. As a general rule you could say: the further away from Amsterdam, the cheaper it will get. But I don't think you want to live in Hippolytushoef... ;-) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippolytushoef )

A not too bad place, close enough to Amsterdam (and the airport, but not too much noise problems though) is Hoofddorp... It's part of the "gemeente" (=municipality) Haarlemmermeer...
Also not bad, and easier to get into the city of Amsterdam from there, is Amstelveen.

Btw: De Bijlmer is a neighbourhood (wijk) IN Amsterdam, it's NOT a suburb (by definition!).

Non of the sub-urbs of Amsterdam is cheap to live, and neither are the towns near it.
You will have to travel several hours before you get to a town where you do not need to be on a waiting list for years to get a house with a price that is reasonable.
Private hire is available, but as students have to find their own room, you will find that all cheaper rooms will be taken by students.

Funnily enough, in Amsterdam itself you have a better chance of finding cheap accommodation than in the smaller towns around it.
While the Bijlmer has a bad reputation, some parts of it are not that bad and might be the best place to start looking.

At this moment all the cheap housing not taken by students is taken by people from eastern European countries coming to the Netherlands searching for work, often via people charging a lot for a small room.

This map, as any google map, allows you to zoom and to search.
You can say that every town in the area has good connections to Amsterdam.

Zoom out till you can read the names, and use those in a search for accommodation.
