I feel sorry for your grandma. I wonder if she knows how you feel. Had a purpose once? What does that mean exactly? That the only place for us is some retirement home and out of sight?

Once? I watch my grandchildren in the afternoons while their parents work. I keep my house in order and I write. Yeah I WRITE, almost all the time. Once? I ain't ready to be put out to pasture yet. I may never be (God willing and the creek don't rise.)

I stay as active as I can with the arthritis in my back and my asthma the way it is and I don't ask for help when it acts up either. But I refuse just to fold up and keel over because someone seems to think we're a 'dreg on society'. In fact the folks I know here on Seniors are NOT 'dregs' on anything.

Everyone has a place in society and the alternative does not bear thinking about.....very Sci-Fi. Our seniors are a mine of information for our youngsters. Your grandma has probably told you about her lifestyle when she was younger and that information may be needed in the future if resources run out. How else will people know how to cope without central heating, microwave cooking, coping without computers, tv's, or any household appliances. That is quite a feasible possibility the way we are all taking for granted the luxuries we have compared to 40 or 50 yrs or more ago.
Apart from that no-one deserves to be called a dreg on society......there are countless things seniors can do that younger people can't. Good question, we think but could have been worded differently perhaps.

As you didn't specify which society you are talking about, I will choose to speak about society in the US. This society bows down and worships youth and as such, rejects and abhors anything that is not youthful. Senior citizens are a constant reminder that youth is ephemeral....something that the US society does not want to think about. Other cultures value their aged more than the US.... but I fear that with the world becoming smaller and smaller and the US having such an influence on societal practices in other countries (for ex. the change in traditional diets and the resulting health concerns...think Mc Donalds) how soon will these cultures begin to relegate their seniors to the "dreg" classification you mention......Intelligent enough for you, lol.....

I will answer with what I see, and no doubt, you will say I'm very UNintelligent, I dont come on Y/A for intelligent tests, I have come on here this morning to find a barrage of stupid questions about Seniors, this one being I think perhaps one of the first, and the only thing I wish to say is, I AM SO GRATEFUL I WAS NEVER AS BITTER AS YOU SEEM TO BE WHEN I WAS YOUNG....I feel sorry for you, I dread to think how you will suffer when you, "if you do", get older, and to be honest my friend, if you think this is an "intelligent question" you ARE in big trouble
Wasn't meant to be a rant to you, hope you have a nice Christmas and Prosperous New Year

Grandmas...Im am a grandmother of 5 grandkids let me see what do I do to help this country...mmm is my purpose over.... Well to answer the question about my purpose to this country and do I still have one let me see Im a taxpayer,Im a register voter,I take care of my granchildren while my children can have a job to feed those kids and guess what the babysitting fee is nothing..You know what i just would like to know where in the world did you get the idea that seniors are dregs of society. If we all listened to and payed attention to how our grandparents lived and raised their children maybe little people like you with your small minded, superior attitde wouldnt be like you are today. Most senior citizens deserve more respect than you allow youself to give.I am 53 years old my mother is still living and I still think she contibutes more to society than you ever will with that narrow minded thinking. MY grandmother passed away 3yrs ago and she raised 8 kids on little money I would like to see you do that at your age.The Bible teaches us to respect our elders and I think you forgot to read that chapter. You opened this door but honey I bet i do more for my country at 53yrs old than you will ever do in a lifetime. Report you NO give you MY opinion YES. How can you truly love your grandmother when you feel like you do..it doesnt sound like love to me when you use the word dreg you are right you got your answer and honey you ask for it.You know I dont care what you think of me and others my age but when and if you reach our age maybe you will get a chance to answer someone who thinks the same thing about you and I hope at that time you have a flashback about how you spoke publicly about us. Good Luck and by the way I feel sorry for you because you dont even have a clue about how much senior citizens do contribute to society. By the way HAVE A NICE DAY

This is a very strange question. You are basically asking, if people no longer produce tangle benefits, do they have a right to live? On the same token, you, obviously a young person who do not work or produce money, but be an expense for your parents, and go to school with our tax money, do you get to live? Why?

If your answer is NO to either the elderly or yourself, then, what should the "society" do with you or elderly?

How are you defining "having a purpose in the society?" Next time, think about what you are really asking before you put your thought for the world to see.

Well I teach disadvantage children and teenagers computers at a community center, I also help them with their schoolwork. All volunteer work, I am not paid.

Next Monday I will help with our annual Christmas party which I also helped pay for. Most of the helpers at these affairs are seniors. It is very hard to get young helpers and we have tried; but, it seems most of them are more interested in running the streets and having more babies for community centers like ours, with our seniors, to look after during much of the day.

Hopefully we are making some small difference and the kids we are teaching will do differently. I hope so.

Hard to understand when you are young. Cycle of life. Worked hard, raised their families, fought for us so you can be sitting asking this question in English. I understand more now than before. This isn't Logans Run where everyone is terminated at 30.You don't shoot a horse hopefully just because its old.The older you get the more you'll get it. By the way...everyone has a purpose. I hope you don't look at your Mother and Father after they've raised you and ask them what their purpose is.

i will make you a bet -- i guess i am spotting you at least 45 years -- we will both be given 100 dollars and no job and can not fall back on what we have in the bank -- i will quit my easy life as a happy retired person and find someone to take care of all my financial business and the animals and we will both move to a mid size city where we have no contacts -- here is the bet at the end of the year i will be worth more than you have more friend, more money in my pocket and be more useful to society -- the bet is 10 grand email me when you are ready to call the bet!!!!

Are you suggesting population elimination. My father, and a lot of other brave men from your country fought in WW 11, so, to give you the life you have now. You're other choice could have been Hitler.

We did not SNUFF them out after they turned 60. they still had much to contribute to Society.

Has the world ever had a President under 25?

Have patience, and you will find that they are very interesting.
