Yes it will wipe everything on your PC ... you can't "Go Back" to an earlier version of Windows ... he should have known better than to install HIS copy .... if you pay Microsoft they will issue you with a new Key and you'll be 100% legitimate ... Good Luck

If you perform an upgrade it will keep all of your settings.
If you value my advice I would say stick with Windows XP Professional and simply ask Microsoft for a working serial number. Windows ME is a terrible operating system. I also doubt Windows XP Pro would see ME as a "upgrade".

You can also click on the validation / registration option where you can phone microsoft and they may give you a code over the phone via their automated message on the 888 number... as they did for me just an hour ago.

Also, I don't know about your earthlink software.. but as a former earthlink technician I can tell you that you do not need their software and you can setup your network settings from within the windows networking and it is a much better solution that takes up less harddrive space, less resources, gives earthlink less access to your computer, etc...

Good Luck

Look I've had/have a computer with windows ME on it and it worked great for 7 years (I still have it but I just bought a new computer) ME is NOT that bad! I'd still be using it if I didnt impulsively purchase a whole new system LOL

You also can not simply "downgrade" from XP to ME you will need to wipe the entire drive and THEN install it (you might like to use darik's boot and nuke but it will delete ALL of your data)

If possible try to get a serial number and register that XP you've got.

The fact that you are willing to put Windows ME on a computer sends shutters down my spine. Do you even know what you are doing to yourself? If you decide to commit such a crime against humanity it will delete everything on your hard drive. You will have to install the Earth link software again then it will work. Also programs that may work on XP may not work on other versions of windows.
