You need to get the grappling hook wich is found pretty late in the game. The small island is something you don't have to do but it would be good to.

There's a small island on Mercay where you blow up a big wall. The tunnel leads to Freedle.

There's Spirit Island, which is located between the three rocks in the southeast part of the southeast map.
