Some of the answers you're asking for lies right in your post. The two major ones is he is avoiding you and arguing (probably for petty reasons). He must trying to find a way to make you breakup with him so it's more easy on his part.

Another reason he is distancing himself from you because he probably has his eyes on another girl. After all, he did breakup with his ex for you so who's not say he is repeating the same cycle this time around?

If you want to know what the hell his problem is, confront him-- breaking in his study for a ten minute phone call or visit wouldn't hurt his chances with failing a class. He is giving you a lame excuse

Either way something is up so prepare to kiss this relationship goodbye. He is probably not ready for a commitment yet.

Step outside the box and see if the things that drew you too him are still there. We can all understand a busy finals student. But if he can't get the time to say, "hey hun, i'm really busy but just wanted to say Hi". 10 seconds of his life that will not only reassure you, but won't cost him much. If he can't even give you that, what less can you he give you to let you see the truth that he is too cowardly to say.

I'm a very honest person! if i wanted to brak up with sombody i would just let them know the best way i could without hurting any feelings. tell him how you're feeling. communication is the key. if it leads to something you don't want or not expecting that just means it's meant to happen
