Sorry to say bruising is indeed not normal. Bruises are ruptured capillaries or veins that cause the blood to surface. That particular massage therapists is manipulating to rough. It's not safe or healthy for bruising to occur after any massage. Its suppose to be therapeutic no damaging.

Hi Samantha. Bruising is NOT normal (although it is fairly common) after a therapeutic massage. It is generally an indication of a nutritional deficiency, e.g. too little Vitamin C.
Medical research indicates that 50% of American adults consume LESS than the RDA for vitamin C. And, 25% consume so little vitamin C they are at risk of developing SCURVY. There just isn't very much "C" in the fast foods, processed foods, and junk foods that most people eat.
Are you eating the recommended 7 to 9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables every day? That is the amount needed to get the RDA of Vitamin C! If you are not, begin to do so today! Also, it may be a good idea to take a Vitamin C supplement, as well as a complete multi-vitamin/mineral supplement (be sure to avoid the "JUNK-FOOD" supplements like Centrum and One-A-Day because they are of very poor quality, that is how they make them so cheap). You may want to ask your therapist for a recommendation, or consult with a knowledgeable person at your local healthfood store.
Best wishes and good luck.
P.S. If these recommendations do now help and you continue to bruise too easily, it would be wise to have a thorough medical evaluation. Sometimes bruising is the first sign of something very serious!

bruising can occur from massage if a person has high blood pressure. If this is so, you should tell your therapist of the condition and he/she should lighten up on the pressure. you do not want bruising after a massage. or you could have an iron deficiency in your diet but in that case, you would bruise easily all the time, not just from massage. really, there are many possible causes for bruising and you should consult your physician to find out if it is an indication of a more serious health problem. if it is not, then you might want to ask your therapist to lighten the pressure to prevent more bruising.

Could also be an Iron deficiency. Easy bruising isn't a massage problem it's an internal deficiency. You probably shouldnt get deep tissue massages until you figure out your deficiency. Women are more prone to get iron deficiency because of monthly occurences (bleeding), where maybe a supplement or more spinach is necessary.
Could also Be a vitamin K deficiency.
These 2 or the vitamin C is the problem other than that you should see your doctor you could be a hemophiliac, or have a low platlet count.
