yea, i'd flush him. He'd get a hell of a ride on the way out and you'd put him out of his misery.

I understand the situation you're in, but you shouldn't kill the fish before it's even dead and certainly not by flushing it, it might clog the toilet up or something like that.
Firstly, clean the tank and wash it thoroughly
Secondly don't feed the fish for a while, until you'll come back it'll porbably healthy and fit like nothing has happened to it.
But personally I would buy an automatic freshener, that freshens the house every 9-10 minutes or so, so if you come back with a dead fish in the house, you won't be able to smell a thing ;)
Or you could just move the fish tank beside a slightly opened window so if it dies the smell would probably fly out the window like smoke :D
Hope this helps!

do NOT flush the fish...
picture this, you're sick (maybe because of poor conditions or you ate too much, or actually caught something) and someone throws you into a pool of acid then it starts swirling and sucks you down into a pipes where you are slammed around and burned in this acid until you die...
I agree with peetee 100% clean his water now and at least once a week until you go, and the day you leave. don't feed him until you come back. hopefully he'll be healthy and fit, but if he's dad open a window and light a candle or something, dont be selfish and put him through a horrible death because you don't want to deal with it.

Let your neighbor or family or friend to watch him. Then, if you find out he dies before you come back, tell him//her to do the things below. If he doesn't, you got lucky and keep him until his last days. It is not right to sacrifice an animal before its right time to die. It's just not right.
The same thing happened to my fish Steven. But, my cat, Mango, got a hold of him before we could find out what to do. My brothers said that it was the right time for him to go. So my story is just like yours, only my ending is bitter sweet, happy that he died the way he was meant to and sad that he died too.
Here are the instructions:
If he dies, this is what you must do:
First, go to the ocean. Bring him with you,.
Second, say a little service for him, or even a prayer.
Third, say goodbye for the last time.
Fourth, throw him into the ocean, where he belongs.
Fifth, remember the memories and move on with your life.
I hope your fish lives a long life!

Flushing is unacceptably cruel. You will need to put him down. Here is a website that explains several options:

Just so you know, your fish is suffering from dropsy. This is usually caused by poor water conditions. Unless you can remedy this situation I would suggest you not get any more bettas.

I just wanted to voice one more opinion that you should not EVER flush a fish that is still alive.

the best way to kill a sick fish is to get 99% rubbing alcohol pour some in a bag and drop the fish into it as soon as the gills touch the alcohol the fish dies pry within 3 seconds i just finished my vet course and we were taught that is the most humane way to euthanise a fish. never flush a live fish down the toilet becasue they stay alive due to the water and the toilet chemicals burn them and they suffer until they starve to death.

Quit feeding him and give him some nice clean water to live in. 18 days is not too long for a fish to go without food. If he has "dropsy" he will be dead when you return. If he has dirty water or digestive issues he will be better when you get back.

Sounded like dropsy to me, too. From what I understand, it is just 'one of those things', mostly can be prevented by clean water, but sometimes they get it anyway.
Dropsy is not curable.
Put him in a baggie and lay it in the freezer. come back later and he is gone.

Here is a good link with humane ways of euthanizing a fish. Flushing is not one of them.
