I got the prescription kind and it's suppose to be flush free. I think this is my 3rd. day. All of a sudden I got really hot inside...then like pins sticking me all over. That lasted about 20 min...now I'm having chills and shaking all over. Can hardly type this. Has this ever happened to you?Really scared me. Any suggestions. I don't have any benedryl. Will this last all night? or is it a once a day thing...any ideas? I was taking it for cholesterol. Is there a nurse on here?.

Thanks SO MUCH for coming to my aid!! It's the next day now...the chills finally went away about an hr. later...then I got a runny nose(which is gone now..thought I had caught a bad cold). ER nurse said she couldn't tell me anything and to call my dr for the one on duty. I did...but no on called me back until this morning. Nurse left a message to take an aspirin beforehand...but I'm scared of them now. I feel like a truck ran over me!! lol

God yes! And I had the same reaction then was nauseous for hours and hours. I will never ever take it again, I really feel for you. The only thing I can say is it will pass in time.

Ask your Dr. about taking a baby aspirin with the niacin it stops the flushing..put a call into your Dr. or Emergency room tonite if you are still having chills and shaking..There is always a possibility of an allergic reaction..

Hi Denie....I am a nurse, any new medication can cause side effects at first. Have you contacted your doctor? I have seen my patients react to this medication in similar ways, it shouldn't last all night,my advice to you is to call your doctors office first thing in the morning, or if your still experiencing side effects right now, call the emergency service(all doctors have to be on call) patients do get scared, drink alot of fluids to try and flush the medicine out ....last resort go to your nearest emergency room..hope i helped you....feel better.

the nurses have given you excellent advice. It did the same thing to me until the doctor reduced the dosage and then gradually built it back to where he wanted it. It really does work quite well for cholesterol, since it not only lowers the bad, but also raises the good

Denie I hope you are under a doctor's care for this. Niacin has potentially serious side effects, including liver damage. The RDA for women is 14 mg. I hope you are okay. Not a nurse.

My Doctor put me on it and I started getting terrible cramps in my feet and legs.

Now I drink a glass of red wine every night, I read some hairy stories about it.
Two sites below may help, but drink a lot of water through the night, and see your Doc. Good luck.:)

I took Niacin a long time ago and got the same reaction that you said you did, so I quit taking it.

I took one pill about 30 years ago and my face turned so red that it really scared me. I never had a sunburn that red and my pulse raced. I was informed that some people have this reaction. Never again!
