To be honest, when I was a kid and teenager I did. I knew no better.
Then my youngest son was diagnosed with autism and I realized that just because he didn't communicate like the rest of us he was freaking brilliant.
I feel so ashamed that it took such a personal experience to see that.

I see all as equal.
I will admit, some people in my life certainly come before others. Everyone is equal; some are simply more equal.
Nonetheless, strictly speaking, as long as they don't get on my nerves or shove their religion down my throat, I see no one as inferior, nor do I see anyone as "above" me.
That may be because I surround myself only with those that are also at my level, of course. Just the same, those that are handicapped, in my opinion, are not people to be looked down upon. Pitied, yes. In some cases, avoided. But less than I am?
Never.
I treat everyone with respect and dignity until they give me a reason not to.

There are a limited number of reasons a person might be handicapped:
1) Terrible accident
2) Birth/genetic defect
3) Being elderly
None of these sound like a valid reason for disrespecting a person. No, they are not inferior.

I do not, I prefer not to make a scene out of their diffrences. I try and assist if they seem to be having trouble but I do not treat them as if they are incapable. It is wise to encourage people to use the capabilities that they DO have, not pity them for what they have not
