There are seven different sub-species of caribou, the largest of which is the Woodland caribou, which on average weigh only about 180Kg. As someone mentioned, caribou are called reindeer - although they are only called that in Europe (same species but different sub-species than those found in Canada and Alaska). Reindeer in Russia are actually domesticated for the most part. There is a herd of domesticated caribou in the North West Territories but herding isn't as prevalent as in Russia.

Moose are MUCH larger (bull (male) moose are HUGE!). On average a moose will weigh between 550-700Kg. They are also MUCH taller (I'd say about as tall as a regular ford truck). They have very long legs to get through very deep snow. Caribou actually have very wide hooves to 'float' on the surface of the snow.

Only male moose have antlers. Both female and male caribou have their antlers. I believe the females keep theirs year round to help with digging out lichens (which they eat) from under the deep snow).

There pelts are also very different. The caribou hairs, if you were to cut them in half, they have a 'honey-comb' structure. This traps hot air from the body much better than hair like ours, or any other mammal.

Anyway, there are lots of other differences but those are the main ones!

Cheers!

Caribou is another name for reindeer. Moose is an entirely different species. Moose are the largest species in the deer family.
