I've actually heard this time before but I know for some it could mean retarded or disabled in some other way but what does it mean to you?

On second thought I also hate the word, "slow" because it's a broad, derogatory term that could mean anyone of various abilities or disabilities.

The first thing that comes to my mind when I hear that word is all the kids in my class who regularly failed their exams when I was in primary school in Thailand. It seems that no matter what they do or how hard they try - they fail.

Now that I have been working with people with disability for many many years and have seen the various types of disabilities, "Slow learner" simply means someone who takes more time than an average person to learn or grasp something. This could be a number of reasons and it DOES NOT necessarily mean a person has any disabilities (retarded - as most people sometimes use).

I am considered a slow learner, but nowhere near retarded. When I think of someone who is retarded, I think of someone with Downs Syndrome, whereas if someone is a slow learner, they take longer grasping concepts that other people would find easy to understand.

when I hear "slow learner" i just think of someone who has a harder time understanding things that they are trying to learn... like math or reading...
it doesn't mean that they are retarded. a couple of my friends were like that and they just needed extra attention by a teachers aide to get through the work

A slow learner is what people often think is a kinder way to describe people with a mild form of mental retardation.

I think of a person who takes a littel longer to catch onto some thing or a concept, rather than someone who is retarded.
