It is a royal pain in the ***.
Fiberglass can be blown in from the inside of the house.
holes are bored into every cavity of the wall and fiberglass is blown in thru a tube. It works fairly well, terribly messy.
There are some guys out there doing work with polyurethane foam that can be injected into the wall thru smaller holes. I have heard that in earlier years the foam expaneded to much and the drywall broke .. looked like a beer gut.
Seems to me this was a long time ago and this problem would have had to be solved by now. ask a insulating contractor about it.

I have to agree with the above answer. It is a BIG pain.

My brothers just blew cellulose into the exterior walls of my older brother's house from the outside. There are now dozens of holes sealed with foam around the house (not too attractive). My younger brother has been doing insulation for almost 25 years, so he knew what he was doing. My older brother says it has cut down the noise from the trains that pass by several times a day.

As for the spray foam, I wouldn't put too much stock in the material as an afterproduct. It still expands quite a bit and I definitely wouldn't suggest someone do it themselves.

Cellulose or Fiberglass can be blown in by a diy'er but I wouldn't suggest it.

I think that the only way to insulate from the outside would require residing and tyvek or a similar product. Blown insulation if you have an older home is a possibility. Plugs are cut from your clapboard siding, insulation is blown into the walls between studs and the plugs are glued back in place. Painting for aesthetics would be necessary.

Many people reside the house with 1 inch Styrofoam board under it. J molding around doors and windows. You could do your self Vinyl siding. Just install J trim than insulation then siding. All available at Home Depot.
