I think I'd take Richards just because he is a more complete package. Good question BTW. I think Stastny will probably end up with more points over the long haul but Richards hits, leads, fights, kills penalties.......he is truly a throwback player, kind of reminds me a Bobby Clarke himself, he will do whatever it takes to win. He is REALLY good on the PK, it seems every game he gets two or three chances to score while SH. A future leader who we could one day be putting in the same grouping as other great captains.
The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that it is Richards in a landslide. I just had to covince myself I wasn't being a biased homer. I am not.

I'd say Richards, but I'm biased due to watching him every Friday night when he was in Kitchener - truly awesome to see him making an impact in the NHL now, future Canadian great right there.

However, I think Stastny is going to have a real big chance at being a major star first, because Sakic won't be going forever and at this rate, Stastny will be able to step right in and make that team his.

One thing I will say though that whether Richards or Stastny ends up with better numbers over their career, I'm so glad that people are realizing that there are good young players outside of Pittsburgh and Washington. Both Stastny and Richards deserve the limelight that they've been getting, and it's refreshing to have a change from the constant Crosby vs Ovechkin montages.

Mike Richards and Paul Stastny have very good potential with their hockey clubs but I think Mike Richards will succeed more easliy than Paul Stastny.

Paul Stastny is already on my team :) and nothing would make me want to have Richards instead of him. Stastny is a much better player imo. He is 6th in the NHL in points. He's a great two-way player. He logs a whole lot of ice time. He plays on the powerplay and kills penalties all the time. While you don't see a lot of flash from him, he does many things right and does very few things wrong, which is evidenced by his +13 rating. I am very happy with Paul Stastny being on my team already and I really want to keep it that way. He is the future captain and leader of the Colorado Avalanche.

~

Bob: well here's some biased opinions huh? lmao. And like I said Stastny kills penalties all the time too.

~~

No LITY make up your frickin mind!! lol jkjk

~~~
Bob: he may have more SHG, but that doesn't mean Stastny isn't also a good penalty killer. It means Stastny is just safer with the puck on the PK. You can't measure how good a penalty killer someone is just by looking at SHG. I don't really know much about Clarke, but Stastny's PPG average was higher, and I think I would've taken Stastny over Clarke.
~~~~

Oh and as far as right now goes:

Stastny: 117 pts. in 112 career NHL games.

Richards: 100 pts. in 166 career NHL games.

PuckDat: are you going to accept my trade or not?

~~~~~
Bob: good points, but how can you say that Richards is the type of clutch playoff player? He hasn't done much in the playoffs yet. 1 assist? It's too early to call him a clutch playoff performer.
~~~~~~

LITY: lmao @ Yan Stastny! So you think Mikita was better than Bobby Hull? I think I remember you mentioning Hull as being in your all time top 10, and I don't remember Mikita being there.

Can I have them both?

I'll take Mike Richards.

I've actually seen a lot more of Paul Stastny than I have of Richards, but I think Richards brings more to the table than Stastny.

To quote your Peter Stastny/Bobby Clarke comparison.............Clarke never won a scoring title......but he has three Hart trophies. Statistically Peter Stastny was a better player than Bobby Clarke...........but as Canadians we all know there is more to hockey than what you see on the scoresheet. And Bobby Clarke brought that game in and game out. And I see the same in Richards.

Paul Stastny will put up more points, but Mike Richards will do the little things better.

To put it in perspective...............Stan Mikita played in the shadow of Bobby Hull for years because he didn't score goals. But every NHL GM in the 60s thought Mikita was best player in the NHL at that time (at least until Bobby Orr came along).

So, if I can only have one...............It'll be MIke Richards.

Jesse
Yan Stastny has the bloodline too...............and I don't think anybody wants him!

Mikey, Hull's in my personal top 10.....Mikita's not. But in the 1960s, NHL GM's thought that Mikita was the league's best player (and 4 scoring titles tend to do that). Mikita is unfortunate in that he's a centre.....plenty of good ones in NHL history. Hull was a left winger...who's his competition? Brett and Luc.

Don't get me wrong...Richards will be an excellent NHL player, however at this point and time I have a hard time seeing Richards make as big of an impact as Stastny. He has the bloodline and the skills to be one of the greats of his generation of hockey players. Plus, If he stays in Colorado....he will always be surrounded by talented players, which will help him out statistically.

Richards, but that may be because I've seen a lot more of him. He can be a tough boy to play against. Can't say I'd be disappointed if I had to settle for Stastny, though.

I'll take Stastny though I am entirley biased in that I have seen him a lot more playing my Cali teams out here.

He is amazing and I think the #1 center and thats on a team with Sakic. He needs a few more years and is a little streaky, but I take him.
