He beats people up. He rapes women.
Villian or hero? The fact that he might be considered a victim of the state or that he might engender some sympathy can't detract from his actions. he's a villian. a hero? He isn't a hero. He doesn't go through what might be considered a heroic cycle. The changes he undergoes are forced upon him. That, to me, excludes the notion or heroics in his latter actions.

He's a very weird boy. This book is set in the "future" so everything is a bit different. The milk bar that they go to has drugs in the drinks so it makes them violent. But he is a villian until the 'treatment' in which he becomes a victim.

Then in the end after they reverse the treatment he actually goes good of his own accord, but at no point is he a hero

It's a tricky one. He's a very violent criminal but is the story's protagonist. On the other hand, in the plot of the story, he's captured and has something done to him that makes him a victim and he has to try to survive. So, I would say anti-hero.

I would have to read the book again. I've forgotten it but I still remember George Orwell's 1984, so unless this is homework help it might not need that much scrutiny.

He is the protagonist, the main character. He does grotesque things, and terrible things are done to him. He is an anti-hero, where the State destroys the best thing about him, when trying to destroy the worst.
