something your mom or dad kept or used that was only theirs. My Dad had one chair at the kitchen table and if he walked in you got up he never said anything but we always moved. Or my mom always had so many plants in the house dad used to say if she brought one more in he was divorcing her.

understood assigned seating I think was for everyone. My dad always had his spot, but at the same time, if my brother and I were there at the same time, we had our assigned seats also. If either of us were in the other's seat and they walked in we would move.

The strange twist to this is that about 20 years ago my dad came to visit us. He sat in my kitchen chair (one with arms). He said it was the most comfortable chair he had sat in. So, our next visit to his house, we carried the chair to him. It didn't match their set, but he didn't care.
When he passed away 5 years ago, the hardest thing for me to do was to bring that chair back home. We were still using the same set, but that chair no longer felt a part of it...it was Dad's. I have never been able to explain this to myself much less anyone else.

My mother always had stacks of books all over the house. She loved to read and wasn't a good housekeeper.
