If you have a Windows XP SP2 disk and you do a clean install.. there will be 90 updates... not including the ones you will have to continue on to after you've rebooted.
It's easy to knock Microsoft. However, as a professional I have to also see this as Microsoft responding to current security threats, emerging threats, etc... and doing their best to correct them.
Any user not automatically updating their systems with the newest security patches for their operating system and any programs they use on a regular basis is asking for problems.
Your security suite checks for updates every day... that doesn't mean there's something wrong with it... it means they are on top of things.
It's also wise to occasionally check for driver updates for things like video drivers, sound drivers, etc...

That's Microsoft for ya! Jump in with guns blazing, and their minds somewhere else. Take Vista for instance...put it out to market before ironing out all the tiny details like printer drivers etc. Windows is prone to hackers...always was, so the updates are essential in keeping up with them.
