Who hijacked the name Republican party.
Southern Democrats were: Christian fundamentalists/evangelicals, war hawks, loved Big US Govt., hated the liberal elite, didn't like the constitution much, & were about as racists as they come.
Kind of sounds an awful lot like today's "Republican Party" doesn't it. I just wish they had the balls to come up with their own orginal name and not tarnish the good Republican name.

You are right. White southern Democrats did become Republicans. Whites continue to leave the Democratic Party. That's because Democrats call anyone that isn't African-American a racist. There won't be any whites, latinos, asians, etc., left in the Democratic Party if the Democrats keep doing that because people don't want to belong to a party that portrays them as racists. I read liberal blogs all the time on the internet. Many of the liberal blogs were created by African-Americans. Democrats don't consider Hillary Clinton to be one of them because she is not black. That's the reason why Hillary Clinton is having such a difficult time competing with Barack Obama. Democrats like Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey more than Hillary Clinton simply because they are black. Basically, most white Democrats in the South abandoned the Democratic Party and gave it to African-Americans. You are 100 percent correct.

I think you are only partially correct. And, today's DNC is more racist than is the GOP. They (the DNC) promotes all black universities. How racist is that? The DNC of old, was all about ceding from the union and was very much pro-slavery. To a degree, they still are all about slavery, only now, it's in the form of social programs such as welfare. The GOP (Lincoln) was all for the abolition of slavery and was very much a God fearing Christian. And, if you think today's GOP is all about BIG government, then what do you call the DNC and their pushing programs like Universal Healthcare? If that's not BIG government, then, I don;t know what is!
Funny, the DNC absolutely hated Lincoln. Now, they claim they have always loved him. They LOVED Ike. He was a Mennonite! Can you say "strong Christian - Right?" Now can you say "hypocrite?"

The solid south were staunch Democrats. When the Dixiecrats joined the Republican party they were forced to tone down their racist behavior. We Republicans are now and will always be the party of Lincoln. Your skewed opinion bears too much bias to be taken seriously.
By the way, we Republicans aren't racists at all. Where did you get that crap? Just because we oppose welfare doesn't make us racists.

my dad is still a southern democrat and he believes they were always for the working man
i wasnt around but workers unions were supported by southern dems, he says
