Yes that's what they are having to do with all the medals that Marian Jones sent back..mind you got a problem with one in that the "new" gold medalist from Sydney is also banned for missing the drugs tests in Athens so might end up going to the Bronze medalist and so on down the scale!!

People should stop answering if they don't know the answer. yes, when the gold medalist gets stripped, the medalists behind them all advance. Same for a Silver Medalist or bronze medalist getting stripped. There was a Canadian rower in Athens that finished 3rd and a few months later, she received the gold after the other two competitors were caught cheating for example.

Many players say that they would rather win Olympic Gold, but deep down I know they want the NBA title a little bit more. The USA already has the best basketball players in the world, so most other countries are already overmatched. Where as winning the NBA Championship, you're playing the best of the best. Notice how Kobe vs. LeBron made more headlines than Kobe & LeBron? BQ - Most definitely, but they're all tight. Especially LeBron BQ2 - I try to take a non-bias view when watching Olympic basketball. Last year, I felt that USA was good enough to win gold, so yeah I guess you can say I rooted for them.

Yes. In 1988, Canadian Ben Johnson beat American Carl Lewis in a highly anticipated 100m final. 3 days later, Johnson tested positive for steroids and had his gold medal stripped from him and awarded to Lewis. 3rd place finisher Linford Christie swapped his bronze medal for silver, and 4th place finisher Calvin Smith was awareded the bronze.

There was no ceremony to mark the new distribution of awards. Calvin Smith received the bronze medal by an Olympic official beneath the stadium grandstand.

Interestingly, Lewis tested positive for steroids in the Olympic Trials, and Christie also tested positive for other banned substances after the Olympic final. By Smith's reckoning, he should have received the gold medal.

No. The silver medalist has to live with silver only. The final record will show as no gold medalist winner, but silver and bronze winner only.

That is because the olympics are already over long time back and what is once officially rewarded, cannot be changed or upgraded -- it can only be stripped.

i think this makes sense.
