Anyone remember some of those old reel films they used to show us in school? Those educational film shorts that're so funny to see now. I remember a bunch were made by Janus Films.

Which do you remember seeing?

Man, I would LOVE if those were on dvd today! There's DEF' a market for em!

I remember seeing one about how bass guitars are made! lol The whole process. It musta been done in the late 60s, cause I remember the guy test playing one had the whole hippie look going on! But the tune he played on it was catchy & all the kids in the audience w/ me started clapping in rhythm w/ the music! :)

I remember The Tell Tale Heart, Old Yeller, and dear lord--the drivers ed films--horrific. The 'You're a Woman Now' film, when the boys got to play outside while the girls watched animated ovaries produce an egg...I wanted to be with the boys.

Ok ~ I know I'm not over 30, and I don't think I've ever seen one of those, but you reminded me of a couple of things.

When I was at school there were some wonderful specially made schools programmes, particularly the History / Geography ones, and ones designed to help children read and write. I *very* fondly remember the series' 'Zig Zag' and 'Look and Read', but not long after I left Primary school the first was dropped altogether, and the second ruined to suit 'modern' children.
I really, really wish they were out on DVD, because they were excellent.

The one that sticks in my memory was a Zig Zag series about map reading, and a moment of 'peril', where this guy has his bicycle wheel caught in the railway tracks, and a train is coming! That kept all us 7-year-olds on the edges of our seats!

My mum told me that when she was little {late 50's ~ early 60's}, they would often show short films about 'What to do if they drop The Bomb'. Apparently they were absolutely terrifying ~ and hiding under the table with a sheet over the top won't save anyone!

I remember sitting on the floor in the gym and seeing How The Grinch Stoled Christmas the day before break would start. I loved the old movies and the memories they bring up.

The old Pee Wee's Playhouse used to play those "film strips" occasionally and they were hilarious. How innocent we were in those days. We had a bomb drill film that had a song titled "Duck and Cover". I saw it in a movie a few years ago about nuclear bomb shelters and related things. Can't remember the name of the movie, though.

Oh, Man!! I know a site that has a bunch of that stuff on VHS. I have found some old B-Movies from the 70s, that are not advertised anywhere else.
The problem is that I am on a different PC and I need to check my old one to find that internet address, if you are interested.

My sister used to work for AVID which has a main video storage facility right up the street from my mom's house.
In fact it used to be my old school till it moved to a larger location.
Her job was to transfer the reels and tapes to DVD format, she used to bring them home for us to watch and there were plenty on file that would be considered extremely racist, but they are history and they have to be preserved.

Look for "Mystery science theater 3000" they created some shorts tapes which will include oldies like "how to be swell";
"The Chicken of tomorrow"; "Mr. BFlat"; "Cheating"; " A Date with your Family"; "Industrial Arts"; "Home economics" and many many more. They sort of make fun of the shorts while they watch them, but nothing different then we would of when watching them at school.

Lol...ask your local school if they know where all those have been archived. I am sure they are collecting dust on some shelf somewhere in the deep recesses of a warehouse.
