My friend has a daughter who is about to turn 8. She refered to her as a "preteen" the other day, b/c she needed to now buy preteen gifts , (mp3 players, and other electronic stuff), instead of regular toys (dolls, and games and other girl toys). She said all the other girls her age were interseted in the same types of things also, and that preteen was now at a younger age then in our day. (btw, we are only in our mid 20's). I think shes crazy, and preteen should not be until age 11. What do you all think?

Pre teen well where I'm from it's only 12 year olds. You are only a pre-teen for a year then you are a teen. Although I think that 11 might possibly be counted as pre-teen. Either way 8 is WAY to young for mp3 players and other electronic items. Kids are trying to grow up to quickly. Parents should put a stop to it. They have that sort of power ya know.

Well 10 years prefer as a early preteen, 10 to 12 is when considered as a fully preteen.. But 1 to 9 you are still a kid

By the broadest definition, preteen refers to children who are not yet teenagers. However, in reality, the preteen demographic is mostly a fabricated marketing scheme. Advertisers like demographics to base their product on so they can better focus on their target. The preteen demographic is almost, but not completely, based upon girls aged 10 to 12. Preteen can also be a social demographic. Again, the main focus would be girls aged 10 to 12, but who also have the distinction of beginning puberty before becoming a teenager.
So, honestly, your friend is "jumping ahead" by calling her 8-year-old daughter a preteen.

I'm 12 and I'm considered as a preteen ! I sort of think its 11-12 but 8 is a bit young ! Some people I know don't even have that stuff now \/

Holy Cow I know my niece was like Im a preteen and Im like um no your not. And she said she read somewhere(shes 9) that preteen is age 8-12. And Im only 17 and I know what your saying when i was like 11 and 12 i started to call myself a preteen not at 8.

8 years old is called a CHILD, not a preteen. As everyone else has said, 11/12 years old is a preteen.

i am pretty sure a preteen is from the ages 11-12.
P.S. i wouldn't get an 8 yr old an electronical item... not yet!
