How do you monitor whether or not they are getting enough iron and nutrients you would get from meats? I am a vegetarian and would like my son to be, but am guessing I should wait until he is a bit older? He is 6 months old.

I am not, but there are ways that you can do this. Make sure your child drinks plenty of WHOLE milk (once he starts on milk) and give him other sources of iron like eggs. Talk to your pediatrician and make a real dietary plan (get referred to a dietician if your insurance will allow it). One thing I have noticed about vegetarian children is they often don't get as much fat in their diet as they need (they need more percentage wise than adults for brain development, among other things.) Just make sure that if you and your health care providers decide that the vegetarian diet isn't working for him, that you give him meats as needed.

I have a 3 year old and a 15 month old - both are healthy vegetarians. They are both above average in height and weight and neither have ever been ill (knock on wood). Their doctor more than approves of their diet. It's not difficult to do, especially if you are a vegetarian yourself. Kids should be filling up on fruits, veggies, and whole grains anyway:-) There is a good book out there called "New Vegetarian Baby". I used it just for meal ideas and snack ideas as I'm not a good cook or creative in the kitchen. Good luck!

me!

i don't worry about it because we are breastfeeding

and as a veggie you should already know the answer to your own question

they get protein and iron from the same places we as adults do.....minus the nut and seeds for the first year

heme from meat is better absorbed by babies but babies have a store of iron from gestation anyways.....and breastfed babies don't have anemia problems

Will depend on the context really. Which is better as a snack - fresh fruit to me. It's tastier and gives you that tad of sweetness. Which can be better as a snack if you are trying hard to minimize back on sugar and lose weight vegetables

If you decide to bring your child up in that lifestyle you need to wait until he is older because he needs plenty of nutrients while he is young and he will get that through meat.
