I think menopause is for older women.

Well, there is such a thing as Premature Menopause. It can happen at any age, unfortunately. But there are also many other conditions that would cause someone to have irregular periods at your age, and there's just no way to tell what you have without undergoing tests. You will need to see a reproductive endocrinologist (fertility specialist) or gynecologist to figure this out. Most doctors don't check for premature menopause, so you'll have to ask about it. You can tell you have it if your FSH is very high. But other reasons you could have an irregular period include stress, hormone imbalance, pituitary problems, PCOS, etc. It's important that you go, because you could be damaging your body by not having periods--regardless of the reason for it. Your bones may become brittle, and at your age, BUILDING bone is crucial. While any gynecologist can treat you, I would recommend the reproductive endocrinologist, since they specialize in this sort of thing, and I think they would be most useful to you.

Unlike your first responder, I disagree strongly that Menopause is only for older women. Go in and see your health care professional and discuss this matter. She will schedule you for an FSH test and see whether or not you are in menopause. There could be a deeper issue at root, here that is responsible for you absence of menses. You may be very thin and not very well nourished (Not saying anorexia, but close). Thin and very athletic girls tend to have erratic periods. You may also have something else that is causing this. If you are in an early menopause and you still want to have children, get to a gynecologist as soon as possible so that they can help you to repair your body and get it healthy enough to carry a baby to term.

You may just be experiencing your body's reaction to stress. Irregularity with periods and whatnot can be from stress, but it can also be from a number of things. It's also not unheard of for a young woman to go through menopause, but it's not super common.

You might want to go to your gynecologist to get a real answer, though.

If you did go through it, you're pretty much unlucky because now your chances of having children are pretty much zilch. :[

Just go to the doc. Good luck! I hope everything is alright!

The only way to know for sure is to have hormone/fertility testing by your doctor. The next time you go in to get your BC pills renewed, discuss your lack of periods with your doctor.

Sounds like it could be PCOS, which is a leading cause of infertility. Definitely go to the doctor to get it checked out.

Have you not been to a doctor about this? Also...you're not anorexic or bulimic are you? The reason I ask is because I was, and when you don't have enough body fat you quit getting your period! You should see a Gyno! Good luck sweetie!

It could be just a sever hormonal imbalance or a pelvic problem like Polycystic Ovarian Disease/Syndrome. You definitely need to have your blood drawn for a hormonal panel and a pelvic US.

Dawn, I abhor your ignorance on the herpes issue. The above symptoms do not represent herpes in any way. Herpes has a completely different set of symptoms, as different as night and day. Educate yourself! Poster, it could be amenorrhea - lack of period due to lack of fat in the body.
