Do they have cognitive thought or are their actions pure instinct?

Of course they do. If they didn't, my dog wouldn't whine until
I covered him up with his blankie at bedtime, or go to his toy basket to get a toy for us to play with, or run to the door when he has to go potty. I can name dozens of other examples from all kinds of animals to prove they have cognitive thought.

They sure do! We had a dog that we penned up in the kitchen when we left the house, to keep her from getting on the furniture (which she would do ONLY when we weren't home), and every time we got home she'd be out of the kitchen....she figured out how to get my daughter's stepstool over to the gate and get up on it, which made her high enough to be able to jump over the gate.

Don't tell me THAT was INSTINCT!

I had one vet tell me that my cat didn't "think". I know, however, that my dog was really interested when we decorated the Christmas tree last weekend. Since then, she just sits and looks at it. She hasn't bothered it or anything. I can't help but wonder what's going through her little head. (This is her first Christmas.)

My cat does. One time she got mad and intentionally went to the bathroom on my new bedding. Another time she got mad and went to the bathroom on a door instead of using her litter box, which was only 15 ft. away. She gets mad whenever she doesn't get enough attention or people food (i.e. cheese, sour cream, ice cream).
