Meiosis has to happen before sexual reproduction. Meiosis is the process which produces the reproductive cells which are called gametes. Eggs are the female gametes and sperms are the male gametes.

So meiosis happens in the ovaries to make eggs. Meiosis happens in the testes to make sperms.
